The Encyclopedia of Malaysia (vol. 9)

An important work in a polyglot nation, Languages and Literature consists of two main parts. The first deals with language, and contains sections devoted to language classification, planning and use as well as thorough coverage of the languages present in both East and West Malaysia. It deals with national language planning, social varieties of Malay, Dusunic languages of Sabah, Northern Sarawak languages, Aslian languages, Chinese in modern Malaysia, Tamil and English in Malaysia. The second part deals with Malaysia’s literary heritage, both oral and written, culminating in a broad discussion of modern literature in Malaysia. It also covers the Hikayat, the Ramayana in Malaysia, post independence Malay novels, and short stories in English.
