Covering the period 1800-1941, the volume starts by exploring the indigenous state and society of 19th-century Malaya, focusing on the peoples of the Malay Peninsula, Sabah and Sarawak. This is followed by an examination of the beginnings of an export economy, especially the importance of tin and rubber. The impact of British imperialism, the implementation of the Federal system on the Peninsula, and developments in Sabah and Sarawak are analysed with special focus on events and personalities. The volume concludes with the dawning of a modern state as the colonial era draws to a close.
