Malaysia is very much a maritime nation, surrounded by a number of seas and straits, and with a very long coastline.
It also has one of the highest biological diversities in the world, including some of the most diverse coral reef and mangrove ecosystems. Many Malaysians live near the sea and depend on it for their livelihood. This volume deals with three main aspects of the seas bordering Malaysia: their physical and chemical properties and geology, their marine biodiversity and ecosystems, and their fisheries and non-fishery resources. Concluding articles on conservation issues highlight the importance of sustaining the seas and their rich resources.
