The Singapore Contemporary Artists Series documents and provides critical commentary on the practices of a select group of contemporary artists from Singapore. While dedicated to enlarging discourse and scholarship on contemporary art, the series also serves as an accessible introduction to the vibrant contemporary art scene in Singapore. In the inaugural volume of the series, the prolific and alternative art practice of artist Vincent Leow is presented. Through close analysis of significant periods of his life as well as personal responses to his key works from artists, curators and art historians, readers will understand the motivation behind Leow’s thought-provoking installations, paintings, sculptures, mixed media art and art performances. Working in a wide range of genres, his art has consistently focused on the making and transforming of something, rather than the showing of a final, polished product. Through this focus on art production, Leow challenges how people view and consume art – either through playful or antagonistic techniques – and in the process, make contemporary art accessible to the mainstream.
