HSBC: Its Malysia Story

For over a century, HSBC has played a role in the development of Malaysia. This book tells the story of the bankers, customers, and sometimes extraordinary circumstances behind that involvement. From Penang in 1884, moving then into the Malay peninsula and after the Second World War across the South China Sea to Borneo, the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (now HSBC) established a truly Malaysia-wide reach even before the country's independence. This was reinforced when it absorbed the Mercantile Bank in 1959, which broadened its countrywide coverage even further. Several of those who spent their formative years in Malaysia went on to very senior positions in the Group. They and many others of the colleagues have been interviewed specially for this book. From their recollections, photographs and archival material emerges a vivid picture not only of their experiences, but also of the emerging country.
