They flew through volcanic valleys of Java in air-force jets, attended the holiest festivals of Bali, were received in audience with the Sultan of Yogyakarta, travelled across miles of open sea in dugout canoe or trading schooner – and the outcome was a revelation: an Indonesia where the magic of old traditions blends with the energy of the modern world.
