In the autumn of 1910, the celebrated Russian writer Leo Tolstoy secretly left his estate in Yasnaya Polyana in the dark hours of the night. A few days later, he died in a train station, at the age of 82. Why did he leave his family, and where was he headed?

Through a detailed study of the diaries and letters written by the people close to the events, Fumiko Davis investigates the unusual circumstances leading to Tolstoy’s disappearance, and unveils a touching story about the private life of a man regarded as one of the greatest writers of all time.

Fumiko Davis was born in Fukuoka, Japan. She graduated from the Russian National University of People’s Friendship in Moscow, with a Master’s degree in History and Literature in 1975. From 1999 to 2002, she lived in Moscow again. During this period, she was introduced to the descendants of Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy, and as a result, was inspired to write about the mystery of his disappearance from his home. This novel was first published in the Japanese language by Gunzo-sha Publishing Company in 2007, and then translated into Russian and published in 2010 by Rus-Olimp Publishing House in Moscow. Among Fumiko’s works are the translated editions of The Fairy Land – Japan; With What Lives a Man; Where There is Love, There is Good; Azbuka; Tolstoy’s Portrait and a children’s fairy tale Poke Poke Mood. Fumiko is also an artist and the founder of Nobby Art, where she teaches porcelain painting and traditional Russian lacquer miniature painting.
