The volume tells—in a stimulating visual format—the story of Malaysia's history since 1940. It focuses in particular on the political conception and development of the nation from the Japanese Occupation of World War II through the Malayan Union, the Federation of Malaya and the troubles of the Emergency. In doing so, it traces the process by which the Malays, Chinese and Indians set aside their differences to seek Independence, achieved in 1957. The volume continues by documenting the federation of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore to create Malaysia in 1963, and Singapore's subsequent exit in 1965. The tragedy of 13 May 1969 is addressed, and the politics and policies that followed are explained. Each of the Malaysia's five Prime Ministers are covered in depth; other chapters are devoted to the machinery of government, electoral politics and the party system, social institutions and foreign policy. Crafted by a team of over 30 academics and experts, the volume will provide readers of all ages a good general understanding of the issues that define Malaysia's political identity.
