No landscape in the world has been more transformed by the hand of man than Singapore's. Once a tropical island of forest, fishermen and gambier plantations, Singapore is now Asia's most dynamic city. Its skyline changes weekly, and some 15 per cent of its land has been reclaimed from the sea in the past 20 years. Renowned Italian photographer Guido Alberto Rossi unveils the many layers of juxtapositions of Singapore through his exploration of the old and the new, the mighty and the humble, in an aerial photographic essay. Simon Tay, one of Singapore's most promising young writers and poets, guides the reader through Singapore's urban and rural landscape, providing a vivid counterpoint to the stunning images yielded by the aerial perspective.
Singapore-born Simon Tay has travelled widely in North America, Europe, Asia, South America, Africa and Australia. He is the author of four books of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, and has twice been awarded fellowships by the International Writing Program of the University of Iowa. He has also completed a Masters in Law at Harvard University as a Fulbright scholar, winning the Laylin Prize for international law. In 1995 he won an award as Singapore's Young Artist of the Year. In 1997 he was appointed a Nominated Member of the Singapore Parliament.

Guido Alberto Rossi was born in Milan in 1949. He is the manager of the Image Bank photo agency in Milan. He is himself a talented photographer specializing in pictures taken from the air. His main hobby is flying. His pictures were published in Rome from the Air, Venice from the Air, Florence from the Air, Tuscany from the Air, published by Editions Gallimard.
