In the 1930s, the acclaimed Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias and his wife Rose made two trips to Bali, the results of which would impact the world’s understanding of the island thereafter. Covarrubias’ Balinese works are unique and greatly indebted to the folk art and spirit of his nation as well as the graphic and illustrative arts of his era. This book contains 50 colour and 30 black-and-white photographs documenting the artist’s work, reproducing for the first time Covarrubias’ Balinese oeuvre, much of which has remained hidden from public view since the 1930s.
Adriana Williams – Williams is a native New Yorker and Covarrubias specialist. She wrote the definitive biography of Miguel and Rose Covarrubias (Covarrubias, University of Texas Press, 1994).
Yu-Chee Chong – Chong is a fine art dealer and adviser based in London and Paris. The visual documentation of South-east Asia is a topic of special interest to her and she has written articles as well as co-written several books on the subject.
