Presenting for the first time over 150 artefacts from the author’s private collection, this book offers a rare glimpse into an area of art history and prehistory which has hitherto been insufficiently explored and underappreciated.
The richly illustrated text traces the origins of artefacts from the Lesser Sunda islands east of Bali, back to the time when the islands were first inhabited by mankind, before establishing them firmly in their historical and cultural context. Providing invaluable insight into the beginnings of what is popularly known as Oceanic art, this volume is essential for anyone interested in art history, archaeology or Indonesian culture.
Anthony Granucci has lived and worked in Indonesia since 1972, when he first began collecting tribal artefacts of island Southeast Asia. An avid admirer, collector and student of the region’s tribal arts, he is trained as an attorney and archaeologist, bringing the skills of both professions to bear on his research. Granucci currently divides his time between San Francisco and Southeast Asia.
