Singapore Sketchbook is a celebration of streets and buildings, classic scenes and marvelous architectural details.  Singapore is a thriving, modern city; but a mixture of modernity and a rich heritage, often beautifully restored, gives it a unique character.  The willingness to conserve the best of Singapore’s old buildings, already well in evidence when the first edition of this book appeared, continues unabated and the results are recorded in paintings and pencil sketches produced specially for this new edition.  A stroll through almost any part of the island will take you past enchanting restored shophouses and a variety of busy religious, civic and commercial structures.

ARTIST

Artist Graham Byfield turns his keen eye and delicate brush to record many aspects of Singapore that have fired his imagination ever since he first lived on the island some 20 years ago.  From the civic centre and the old districts of Kampong Glam, Little India and Chinatown – the soul of the city, rich in tradition – to some surprising gems scattered around the island, he is a perceptive guide, and shows how the island’s history is reflected in the ace of Singapore today.

AUTHOR

The text is written by Gretchen Liu, one of the foremost authors on Singapore’s architectural heritage.  It includes a Gazetteer, with more detailed information on the buildings shown in this book.

Gretchen Liu has been associated with some of the most distinguished books on Singapore and its history. Among them is Singapore: A Pictorial History 1819-2000, published in association with the National Archives, which tells the story of the island through the work of artists and photographers who recorded it. She is also author of Pastel Portraits, one of the first books to document the island's architectural heritage; In Granite and Chunam, a lavish ccommemorative book on Singapore's national monuments; and Raffles Hotel, which marked the restoration of this Singapore landmark.
