Traditional Chinese Toggles: Counterweights and Charms is the definitive reference guide to the cultural and historical significance of zhuizi, or Chinese toggles.

Toggles were used by the ancient Chinese to secure personal effects such as eating kits and money pouches to their belts. Despite their utilitarian purpose toggles evolved into miniature works of art, made from various materials including wood, ivory and jade. This book contains detailed interpretations of the symbols and rebuses featured on the toggles as well as close-up photographs of over 1,500 toggles from six different collections.

Traditional Chinese Toggles is the first book published on the subject in over 50 years and is a must-have for anybody interested in the art of personal adornment.

Margaret Duda

Author of Four Centuries of Silver, Margaret Duda has also published several articles on Chinese adornment in Arts of Asia, Ornament, and the brochure for the New York Arts of Pacific Asia Show. She sold her first short story at the age of 17, and her stories and articles have appeared in many publications since then. A graduate of the University of Delaware, she has traveled to more than forty countries, and Traditional Chinese Toggles is the culmination of eleven trips to China and eight years of research. Margaret is as much a photographer as a writer with photo credits in many books and newspapers such as The New York Times. She has also exhibited her work in a number of gallery shows.
