Showcasing the splendour and distinctiveness of Perak, this book is a comprehensive record of the state’s built heritage. Over 150 landmarks—and countless architectural details—are featured, each painted in watercolour by one of three talented Malaysian artists.
Commencing with an introductory chapter covering the state’s architecture and history, the book leads the reader through the diverse range of building styles found in Perak, from vernacular dwellings to Neoclassical schools and from grand Mogul mosques to Art Deco cinemas. Landmarks from each of Perak’s nine districts are featured, including bridges, memorials and even the giant structures of the tin mining industry.
Formely a teacher, A Kasim Abas pursued his dream of becoming a full-time artist in 1992. Since then, his work has appeared in several solo and group exhibitions in Malaysia, Singapore and the United States of America. Born in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, he is a documentary artist, and his illustrations include that in Sarawak Sketchbook.
Chang Huai-yan is the principal partner in a Singapore-based landscape architecture firm, Salad Dressing. He was born in Penang and trained as an architect and landscape architect. He takes special interest in sketching and recording details of regional architecture and landscapes. His drawings have appeared in Made Wijaya's Tropical Garden Design and Architecture of Bali.
Chin Kon Yit is one of Malaysia’s most eminent watercolour artists. He is largely a self-taught artist, having been forced to abandon art school after one year’s studies due to lack of funds. However, his natural skills and determination won him a prominent position in a leading advertising agency, and he worked in this field for 15 years. In 1991 he became a full-time artist. Chin’s work has been shown in several solo exhibitions in Kuala Lumpur, many joint exhibitions, displayed in several hotels, and published in calendars and on stationery.
The award-winning architect Chen Voon Fee, well known for his building designs and his conservation projects, is the author and architectural consultant for the Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Malacca Sketchbooks. One of the founding members of Badan Warisan Malaysia (Heritage of Malaysia Trust), he devoted much of his time promoting public awareness of the historical value of Malaysia’s old buildings and their environment in both urban and rural areas.
