Malaysia is a multifaceted country—ethnically, culturally, linguistically and religiously—and it is this diversity that makes it so fascinating. This harmonious blend extends even to the nation’s architecture. Landmarks of Malaysia: 365 Watercolours by Chin Kon Yit brings together the landmarks of the entire country—including the Peninsula, Sabah and Sarawak. From remote Bajau Laut water villages to the Petronas Twin Towers, the breathtaking architecture and natural landscapes of the country’s 12 states, and of the federal territories, are recorded in vibrant watercolour and delicate sketches by acclaimed artist Chin Kon Yit. Accompanying the sketches are descriptions that provide insights into the locations features. The collection of paintings is preceded by an introduction on the architectural inheritance captured in the paintings, by architect Lim Take Bane.

Readers of the book will be taken on a nationwide tour as seen through the eyes of the artist with his sketchbook in hand. Looking at this book, Malaysians and visitors alike will be reminded of the country’s rich architectural heritage and of the cultural diversity that is the hallmark of Malaysian society today.

One of Malaysia’s most eminent watercolour artists, Chin Kon Yit has a particular affinity for the rustic charm of historical buildings, everyday street scenes and traditional trades in Malaysia. Born in Klang in 1950, Kon Yit draws inspiration from the noisy yet colourful and exciting environment he grew up in. He became a full-time artist in 1991. His work has been displayed in many exhibitions and published in books, calendars and stationery. This will be his sixth book, having previously contributed to Kuala Lumpur: A Sketchbook, Penang Sketchbook, Malacca Sketchbook, Landmarks of Selangor and Landmarks of Perak

Trained in the United Kingdom at Canterbury and London, Lim Take Bane is a chartered architect. He practices architecture and interior design as a principal of Akitek Shilpa. He also teaches architecture at the Faculty of the Built Environment at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur. He is actively involved in the conservation and adaptive re-use of heritage buildings in Malaysia.
