Selangor: 300 Early Postcards presents a wide range of views of the Malaysian state of Selangor, including the nation’s capital city of Kuala Lumpur which was part of Selangor until 1974. The postcards date from the late 19th century to the 1970s. The changing landscapes and townscapes of Peninsular Malaysia’s most developed state are vividly captured in a series of postcard galleries.
The book begins by tracing key developments in the early production of picture postcards in Malaya in general, and specifically in Selangor, even as they are intertwined with developments in the world. The book then covers the state’s sultanate, the royal family and the government of the state. This is then followed by comprehensive coverage of the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. After this the book explores Klang, Port Swettenham (now Port Klang) and other towns in the state. It also covers the people, economy and flora and fauna of the state, besides providing a short history of deltiology and philatelic history, rounding off the book perfectly as a collector’s item. Selangor: 300 Early Postcards is thus an important source of information for the collector. It is also a richly informative visual document of a formative period in the history of Selangor.
Professor Cheah Jin Sengis an avid philatelist and deltiologist, and is particularly well-versed in the postal history of Singapore and Malaya.
