Based on a selection from the author’s private collection, Malaya 500 Early Postcards offers a rare and comprehensive glimpse into the changing landscapes, townscapes and lifestyles of Malaya, from the late 19th century to 1963, when it was renamed Malaysia.
The book traces key developments in the early production of picture postcards in Malaya. In the main section, the history of Malaya is presented pictorially by a series of postcard galleries subdivided into the various states of the Federated Malay States (Pahang, Perak, Selangor and Negri Sembilan), the Unfederated Malay States (Johore, Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah and Perlis) and the Strait Settlements (Penang and Malacca, excluding Singapore). Many of the images are extremely vivid, some of them are very rare collectors’ items.
Penang-born Professor Cheah Jin Seng is an avid philatelist and deltiologist, and is particularly well-versed in the postal history of both Singapore and Malaysia. He is currently a Fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society of London and a Director of the Singapore Philatelic Museum. An ex-board member of the National Museum of Singapore, Prof. Cheah has written and co-published extensively on the subjects of stamps and postcards in Singapore and Malaysia. Prof. Cheah is by profession an Emeritus Consultant at the Department of Medicine in the National University Hospital of Singapore.
