This volume explores the major genres of the Malaysia’s colourful tradition of The Performing Arts.
The first section introduces the sources of that tradition and is followed by sections expounding individual genres including storytelling, Wayang Kulit, theatre, and instrumental music.
Art forms covered in the volume include (amongst others): Pantun, Mak Yong, Malay, Chinese and Indian folk dances, Orang Asli music, Asyik and Joget Gamelan, the Nobat orchestra, contemporary dance, recorded popular music, and Malay films.
Dr Ghulam Sarwar Yousof has done a great deal ofpioneering work in traditional Malay theatre genres such as Mak Yong, Wayang Kulit, Bangsawan and others. His research in Southeast Asian traditional theatre is highly significant and his dictionary on the subject, published in 1994, is by far the most complete work on the region’s traditional theatre styles. In addition to teaching and researching theatre, Ghulam Sarwar Yousof also writes short stories, plays and poetry.
The sixty-five different topics in the book are explained clearly and concisely by leading local and international academics and subject specialists. Besides the volume editor who has contributed many articles, authors include Jacqueline Pugh-Kitingan, Tan Sooi Beng, Mohd Anis Md Noor, Ang Bee Saik and Patricia Matusky.
