Singapore: small tropical island and dynamic city, where some of Asia’s tallest buildings tower over modest quayside shophouses. Few landscapes, coastlines or city skylines have been transformed as rapidly as those of Singapore. Seen from the air, the island is revealed as a spectacular landscape of intricate patterns, rich textures and diverse colours. Stunning images show the true and unexpected variety of this city-state, providing a fresh perspective from which to view its landmarks and to explore the less-well-known sights of its industry, agriculture and outlying islands. In Over Singapore, award-winning Singaporean photographer Richard W J Koh showcases the dynamism of this ever-changing nation. His photographs are complemented by the insightful text and captions of diplomat and international lawyer Professor Tommy Koh who provides a revealing historical introduction to the book and an insider’s guide to the north, south, east and west of the country.
Professor Tommy Koh is currently Ambassador-At-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Centre for International Law, and Rector of Tembusu College at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He is the Co-Chairman of the China–Singapore Forum, the India–Singapore Strategic Dialogue and the Japan–Singapore Symposium. Prof Koh was also Singapore’s Chief Negotiator for the USA–Singapore Free Trade Agreement. He has chaired two dispute panels for the WTO. In 1984, Yale University conferred on Professor Koh an honorary degree of doctor of law. He received the Elizabeth Haub Prize for Environmental Law in 1996 and was made a Champion of the Earth by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 2006. He also received the Great Negotiator Award 2014 from Harvard University on 10 April 2014.
Richard W J Koh is a Singaporean photographer who considers photography a mystical art where one harvests light which comes from Above. Richard’s photographs have been exhibited in Singapore, Dhaka, San Francisco and New York, and they have represented Singapore at ASEAN Day in Bangkok. He has received multiple international photo competition awards, including several from International Photography Awards and Prix de la Photographie, Paris. In the air, he has photographed from planes, civilian and military helicopters, and hot-air balloons, covering areas in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Cambodia and Myanmar. Currently, Richard runs Aerophotoworks, specializing in aerial, aerospace and aviation photography.
