The highway network of Malaysia has come a long way from the limited infrastructure of the 1960s – when roads were little more than upgraded bullock cart tracks. Privatisation in the 1980s led to a rapid increase in the construction and use of tolled expressways. Today, millions of road users benefit from the nearly 1,500 kilometres of world-class highways.
This is no mean feat: the network was cut through granite hills, pushed through impenetrable jungle and carried over deep abandoned tin-mines. In the process, Malaysia has propelled itself to the forefront of highways technology and is now exporting its expertise to Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
This book tells the story of the construction, operation and regulation of Malaysia’s 25 operational toll expressways and of the role played by the Malaysian Highways Authority in this its 30th year.
