They brought the printing press and telescopes, religious fervor and medical innovations; they advised the monarchs and then based their operations there for a controversial war. Americans in Thailand is the story of one of the world’s most fascinating foreign communities. Beginning with the first American to step foot on Siamese soil in the early 1800s and covering the growth of the community from the early traders and missionaries through the Vietnam-war era, the illustrated title explores the colorful and compelling impact Americans have had on this Southeast Nation.
Several long-time American residents of Thailand collaborated on this title, including Denis Gray, who joined The Associated Press in 1972 and became Bangkok’s bureau chief in 1976, covering major issues in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe; Jeff Hodson, who is a former editor and reporter for The Seattle Times and was a project director for Internews in Chiang Mai, Thailand; Robert Horn, who has worked as a reporter in Thailand for Time magazine, The Associated Press and contributed articles to Fortune, Businessweek and Institutional Investor; and Wesley Hsu, who is an award-winning copy writer. The book was edited by Boston native Nicholas Grossman.
